By Michael Lewis
TropiGol.com Editor

For all you Red Bull fans who want to see Rafa Marquez plying his trade somewhere else, sorry he is not going anywhere.

So says Red Bulls general manager and sporting director Erik Soler.

The Major League Soccer team has no intentions of selling, transferring or trading the Mexican National Team captain.

“We have not had any discussions with Rafa or anybody else about moving him,” Soler said during a Thursday afternoon conference call.

“There’s no way we’re doing anything with Rafa. We’re going to stick with him and we still believe he will produce.”

Soler said that he speaks to Marquez just about every day.

“We don’t look for anything, he doesn’t look for anything else,” he said. “For me Rafa is a Red Bull player and will be so, until the end of his contract. At that time we will decide if we should prolong it or not. But until that time, he’s here and that’s it.”

With central midfielder Teemu Tainio facing an eight-week layoff, Marquez becomes a much more valuable piece for the Red Bulls.

“We have to think about the big picture,” Soler said. “Sometimes we are disappoint with a player. Sometimes we are happy.”

Marquez began the season on the sidelines, serving the final two games of a three-match suspension he incurred during the MLS Cup playoffs for inciting a post-game fracas for throwing the ball at LA Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan.

In April, Marquez was slapped with a three-game suspension for breaking the collarbone of San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Shea Salinas in a 2-2 draw.

Marquez played his first game since the ban as a central defender in a 3-2 win at the Philadelphia Union on Sunday. He set up the first goal and the game-winner by Kenny Cooper in the 78th minute.

“He did a great job in Philadelphia,” Soler said. “He turned the game around for us. We hope he will continue to do it.”

VANCOUVER — For the longest time Eric Hassli could not buy a goal.

Now, he can’t stop scoring and some of them are vital ones.

Take, for example, what transpired between his Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC in the first leg of the semifinals of the Amway Canadian Championship at BC Place on Wednesday night.

The Frenchman and Designated Player scored a minute into stoppage time to give Vancouver a 1-1 draw with Toronto. It was his fourth goal in his last five games after he endured a 17-game scoring drought that started last August. It also was the second time in two weeks that Hassli came off the bench to score in added time as he tallied in the waning moments of a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on May 19.

Hassli scored on a spectacular 15-yard volley, converting a long ball from Alain Rochat before a crowd of 14,878.

“I have tried to practice that goal every day,” Hassli told the Vancouver Sun. “It was a good goal. I was lucky.”

The Whitecaps are trying to break Toronto’s three-year hold of the championship. The second leg is set for BMO Field in Toronto next week.

Jamaican international forward Ryan Johnson gave the visitors a 1-0 lead as he headed in a Julian de Guzman cross in the 66th minute.

Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie felt Toronto will be under a lot of pressure next week. The club is 0-8-0 in the worst start in the league’s 17-year history.

“There’s a lot of pressure on Toronto because it’s in their home stadium and it’s kind of their cup to lose,” he told the Sun. “We’re going there with a little bit of pressure off us. Sometimes at home, there’s a little bit more pressure on you.”

The winner of the series will play in the CONCACAF Champions League.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The pairing of Canadian international Dwayne De Rosario and Hamdi Salihi at forward worked out quite well for D.C. United on Wednesday night.

Each Designated Player scored a goal in the club’s 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids at RFK Stadium.

“It’s a nice option,” D.C. coach Ben Olsen said. “It was pretty good, overall. I thought some of the guys that haven’t had 90 minutes tend to get a little tired, and I think Dwayne’s had a lot of games where we’ve pushed him. It was good to move him up, maybe give him a little less of a workout today. It looked good — it’s definitely a good option to have.”

De Rosario gave the hosts all the scoring they needed with his third goal of the Major League Soccer season in the 25th minute.

Lewis Neal picked up a loose ball in midfield and ran toward the net before sending a pass to De Ro as he slotted the ball past goalkeeper Matt Pickens.

Salihi gave United an insurance goal in the 60th minute. After De Rosario cleared the ball, Neal sent a cross in for Branko Boskovic, whose header was saved by Pickens. But Salihi put home the rebound for a 2-0 margin despite protests from Rapids players who claimed he was offside.

Baskovic, De Rosario and Salihi played togehter for the second time this season.

“DeRo and Branko are great players and it’s not difficult to play with them because they can find you everywhere,” Salihi said. “It’s always good to play with players like this. I’m especially happy for Branko because he is coming back and he played a great game. He deserves this because he is working hard everyday and he is a good player.”

Five Central American countries championships are going down to the wire this week, with spots in the CONCACAF Champions League at stake.

A quick look at Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama and Nicaragua:

Costa Rica

Herediano recorded a 4-2 victory over Santos in the first leg of the Costa Rican Torneo de Invierno final on Saturday. The series will conclude at the Estadio Ebal Rodriguez, home of Santos, on Saturday.

If Herediano wins, it would be the team’s first title since 1993. The winner will join 2011 Torneo de Verano champion Alajuelense in the 2012-13 Champions League.

Honduras

Marathon and Olimpia tied 0-0 in the first leg of the Torneo Clausura final in Honduras on Saturday.

Olimpia, which qualified for the 2012-13 CCL by winning the 2011 Torneo Apertura, will host the second leg on Saturday. Even with a loss, Marathon will qualify for the CCL as the team with the next highest number of points over the two regular seasons after Olimpia.

Guatemala

Municipal and Xelajú will face off in the Torneo Clausura final in Guatemala beginning Wednesday and concluding on Sunday.

Municipal defeated archrival Comunicaciones. 2-1, on Sunday after a 0-0 tie in the first leg of the semifinals Thursday. Xelaju grabbed a 2-1 aggregate semifinal victory the same night over Marquense with a 1-1 tie.

Municipal already has qualified for the CCL by winning last season’s title. Xelaju also will qualify if it wins the Clausura title. However, if Xelju loses, Comunicaciones will gain Guatemala’s last spot as the club with the highest total of points over the two regular seasons.

Panama

The Torneo Clausura final in Panama will be decided between Tauro and Chepo at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City on Friday.

Chepo reached its first final with a scoreless tie on Saturday after a 1-0 win in the first leg of the semifinals. Tauro defeated regular season leaders Sporting SM with a 2-0 aggregate semifinal victory (1-0, 1-0) . The winner of the final will join Torneo Apertura winner Chorrillo in the CCL.

Nicaragua

Real Esteli downed Diriangen, 3-0, in the first leg of the Nicaraguan Torneo Clausura final on Sunday.

The teams will meet again on Sunday. Esteli, winner of the Torneo Apertura last year in Nicaragua, already has guaranteed itself a berth in the CCL as the team with the highest total of points over the two regular seasons.
