Instant replay: Monterrey, Santos tussle again for a title

Here will go again.

Two-time CONCACAF Champions League champion Monterrey will face Santos Laguna in the Mexican Torneo Apertura final.

The repeat of the 2011-12 CCL final will kick-off in Monterrey on Thursday before wrapping up in Torreon on Sunday night.

Monterrey reached the final with a 2-0 home win over America on Saturday after a scoreless tie in the series’ first leg on Wednesday.

Santos eliminated defending champion Tigres with two last minute goals from Oribe Peralta on Sunday to grab a 2-2 draw. The aggregate score finished 3-3 and the Guerreros advanced thanks to its better position in the regular-season standings.

Santos, as runner-up of the Torneo Apertura, had qualified for the 2012-13 CCL. Monterrey also booked its ticket as a Torneo Clausura finalist.

If Santos wins this tournament, Guadalajara will take Mexico’s last CCL spot as a result of having the best regular-season record in the 2011 Torneo Apertura of the teams not already qualified. If Monterrey wins, America would qualify due to having the best record in the Torneo Clausura season after Santos and Monterrey.

Klinsmann calls in 16 players into U.S. camp

CHICAGO – Goalkeeper Tim Howard, defender Carlos Bocanegra, midfielder Michael Bradley and striker Clint Dempsey were among 16 players called into training camp on Tuesday to prepare for the U.S.’s World Cup qualifiers next month.

The team will train at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.

Tuesday’s call-ups consists mainly of foreign-based players who have completed their seasons and are ready to prepare for the series of matches that culminates in the team’s first qualifier against Antigua & Barbuda in Tampa, Fla. on June 8. The Americans play at Guatemala on July 12.

As many as 13 additions will be announced May 20 and will be a mixture of domestic and foreign-based players to round out the training camp.
The team will train in Orlando until May 25, when Klinsmann will select a final 23-man roster for the upcoming five matches. The group then departs for Jacksonville, Fla. in preparation for the match on May 26 against Scotland (8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Galavision). The team will host a public training session May 25 at EverBank Field .

“All the players coming now for this very special four-week period represent our core,” Klinsmann said. “It’s a clear signal to other players that right now it’s down to business. We’re playing World Cup qualifiers. It’s not about experimenting or seeing different players, it’s about who we think are the best. We are excited to start with this first group of players, and then welcome more at the beginning of next week. It’s the first time we will have our best players together for a longer stretch of time, so we have a chance to work very hard and go out and get results.”

Dempsey has a minor groin injury, according to Klinsmann, who won’t push the Fulham player in the early stages of camp.

“Clint has a minor groin injury which should be fine within the next couple of days,” he said. “We’re going to take it a bit easy in the beginning, and from there we don’t expect any problems.”

Defender Timmy Chandler declined an invitation to attend camp. The 22-year-old Chandler, a starter for Nuremberg in the Bundesliga, made his U.S. international debut in March 2011 and has eight international appearances.

“He feels at this point he needs to take a break,: Klinsmann said. “It’s disappointing not having him as a part of the team at this important juncture., but ultimately a player must decide what is best for him. The door is certainly not closed on Timmy, but in the moment we move on without him.”

Klinsmann stressed that the time to experiment is over. It’s time to get down to business.

“All the players coming now for this very special four-week period represent our core,” he said. “If tomorrow was the World Cup, this is the group that comes in for our World Cup roster. It’s a clear signal to other players that right now it’s down to business. We’re playing World Cup qualifiers. It’s not about experimenting or seeing different players, it’s about who we think are the best.”

Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando and midfielder Kyle Beckerman were the only domestic-based players seleted on Tuesday.

Vela scoreless in season finale in Spain

Carlos Vela, who turned down two Mexican national sides last week, went scoreless in his final La Liga match of the season over the weekend.

Vela, on loan from Arsenal (England), played 86 minutes for Real Sociedad in its 1-0 win over Valencia.

He finished the season with 12 goals and seven assists in 34 appearances.

Real wants to purchase the Mexican’s contract, but Arsenal’s asking price was too high. Still, Vela said he will not return to Arsenal.

Here’s how some other Mexican internationals fared over the weekend in Spain:

* Midfielder Pablo Barrera played just two minutes for Real Zaragoza in its 2-0 victory over Getafe.

* Defender Hector Moreno played the entire game for Espanyol in its 1-1 tie with Sevilla.

Peralta powers Santos Laguna into Mexican Clausura final

The Mexican Clausura final certainly will have a familiar ring to it as the CONCACAF Champions League finalists will tussle for the title this week.

Two-time CCL champion Monterrey and runner-up Santos Laguna won their semifinal series. Monterrey had bested Santos for the CCL crown last month.

Oribe Peralta’s late brace lifted Santos Laguna over Tigres Monterrey on Sunday. Tigres, which had recorded a 1-1 tie in the first leg, had grabbed a 2-0 advantage behind Hector Mancilla’s two goals in the opening 30 minutes.

But Peralta, a Mexican interantional tallied in the 86th and 89th minutes to level the game at 2-2 and the aggregate goals at 3-3. Because Laguna had a better regular-season record, it reached the final.

Monterrey recorded a 2-0 win over Club America in the second leg of the semifinals to capture the series by the same score.

The teams had played to a scoreless draw in the first game. Basanta gave Monterrey all the scoring it needed in the ninth minute and de Nigris added an insurance goal in the 52nd minute.

Barracuda drops 5th consecutive league game

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — Antigua Barracuda FC completed a grueling seven games in 12-day stretch on the wrong foot on Sunday, losing a one-goal advantage to defending champion Orlando City in a 2-1 USL PRO league loss at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

It was the Barracuda’s fifth consecutive league defeat and Orlando’s second in 48 hours on the Caribbean island.

The hosts took the lead in the 20th minute as Stefan Smith was brought down in the penalty area by Keiron Bernard. Quinton Griffith slotted the ensuing penalty kick into the left corner of the net.

Antigua’s lead was short-lived, however, as the visitors equalized six minutes later as Griffin latched onto John Rooney’s through-ball into the right side of the penalty area and shot home into the left corner.

Orlando had the better of the play from that point on, pressing forward repeatedly for the rest of the first half. The Lions continued to press to start the second half, and Allen scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 49th minute, rising to head home Anthony Pulis’ corner kick.

Though the Lions took the lead for good early in the half, they never took their foot off the gas. Kevin Molino added a spark to the lineup, coming on in the 62nd minute. Molino found space near the top of the box and nearly struck gold in the 72nd minute. His shot was deflected, but fell just wide of the post. Dennis Chin and Jamie Watson had goals called back for offside and a foul, respectively.

Antigua had a late chance to find an equalizer, Griffith’s diving header from 12 yards sailing wide of the left post.

The Cudas will get a break before their next matc as the club’s players begin their preparations to represent the Antigua and Barbuda National Team in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, which open in Tampa, Fla. on Friday, June 8 against the United States.

The Barracudas next play in USL PRO against the Charleston Battery on Thursday, June 15.
