Shea sees red, lift U.S. U-23′s over his own Dallas side

FRISCO, Texas — International soccer friendlies sure can make for some very strange bedfellows.

Take, for instance, the U.S. Under-23 National Team’s 2-1 friendly win over F.C. Dallas on Wednesday.

Dallas midfielder Brek Shea wound up scoring the game-winner against his own team — no, it wasn’t an own goal — in the 51st minute at adidas Field at F.C. Dallas Stadium.

The U.S. finished the match with nine men after Kofi Sarkodie (58th minute) and Shea (75th minute) were awarded their second yellow cards for infractions.

This was a warm-up match for the U.S., which will try to qualify for the London Olympics next month. The Americans will take on the Mexico U-23 team here next Wednesday in another warm-up encounter.

The hosts took the lead off a corner kick in the 15th minute. Colombian forward Fabian Castillo sent a line-drive corner to the center of the six-yard box, where Andrew Jacobson beat his defender to the ball and nodded a hard finish into the back of the net.

The U.S. connected for the equalizer four minutes later on a corner kick taken by Freddy Adu. It turned out to be an exact copy of Jacobson’s goal. Adu picked out Ike Opara at the top of the box and the defender headed a shot to the back post to level the score at 1-1.

Six minutes into the second half, Shea struck for the winner. Playing on the left flank, Shea timed his run well and beat the defense to a ball played over the top by Adu. In alone against goalkeeper Kevin Hartman, Shea cracked a hard shot high to the back post from 12 yards.

The U-23′s forced Hartman was forced to make several saves to keep the hosts in the game.

He began by denying the U-23s a goal with a point-blank save in the 12th minute. Amobi Okugo collected the ball in central midfield and played a ball over the top to Juan Agudelo. With Dallas center back Hernan Purtuz on his back, Agudelo chested the ball out in front of him and was in alone on Hartman. Agudelo took a hard shot at the back post, but Hartman punched the shot away.

It’s back to The Office for the Reggae Boyz

Jamaica and Cuba tussle in an international friendly at The Office in Kingston, Jamaica on Wednesday as a World Cup qualifying warm-up.

Both teams start the CONCACAF semifinal qualifying round on June 8, but Theodore Whitmore, coach of the Reggae Boyz, felt this was a perfect way for the players and team to acclimate themselves to their national stadium.

“We haven’t played in the National Stadium, our ‘Office’, for quite some time now,” Whitmore was quoted by the Jamaica Observer on Monday. “Our World Cup qualification kicks off on June 8 and it will be in the ‘Office’, so it’s really for us to get some games and try to get the public back behind us.”

Incredible as it may sound, the Jamaicans have not played at The Office since 2010.

“There are things we’re looking at and… want to achieve,” Whitmore told the Observer. “And although our main objective is the World Cup Qualifiers, we want as much as possible to put in a good performance.”

Most of Jamaica’s team is composed of domestically based players, although Whitemore has called in three Major League Soccer players — captain Jermaine Taylor, Jevaughn Watson and Ryan Johnson.

The Cubans hold a 15-9-8 record against Jamaica, outscoring their Caribbean rivals, 48-39. The series began with a 3-1 Cuba win in a CAC Games qualifier on March 16, 1930.

Wounded knee: Gooch out 2 months due to knee surgery

Gooch is out.

U.S. international and Sporting Lisbon defender Oguchi Onyewu will be sidelined for two months because of knee surgery, the Portuguese First Division side announced on Tuesday.

Medical scans on Tuesday revealed that Gooch had suffered a torn ligament and meniscus in his right knee. The injury was sustained in Sporting’s 1-0 win over Pacos Ferreira on Sunday.

This wasn’t the first time Onyewu suffered a knee injury. He tore his petallar tendon in his left knee during a World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica on Oct. 14, 2009. He returned for 2010 South Africa, but he struggled in the World Cup. Onyewu, however, did not become his old selt until the Portuguese season began.

His latest knee injury could put into jeopardy whether he will be at full strength when the United States begins World Cup qualifying against Antigua & Barbuda in Tampa on June 8. He should return to action near the end of April. Whether that will be enough time for Gooch to retain his form, it remains to be seen.

Onyewu has scored five goals, including four in the league.

Sporting is fourth in the First Division, trailing leaders Benfica by 13 points.
