Five CONCACAF players, including Canadian international striker Christine Sinclair and the United States forward Abby Wambach, were named to the short list for the FIFA women’s world player of the year by FIFA on Thursday.
Former U.S. coach Pia Sundhage, who left the team to coach Sweden after guiding the Americans to the Olympic gold medal, and Canada coach John Herdman, who directed the Maple Leafs to the silver medal at the Summer Games, were named as candidates for coach of the year.
The other Americans on the short list included midfielders Carli Lloyd and Megan Rapinoe and forward Alex Morgan.
Sinclair last week was suspended for four games by FIFA for his comments after Canada’s 4-3 loss to the U.S. in the Olympic semifinals.
