FIFA bans 3 Guatemalan players for life
ZURICH, Switzerland — Three Guatemala players on Wednesday were banned for life by FIFA for fixing national team and CONCACAF Champions League games.
Gustavo Cabrera, Yoni Flores and Guillermo Ramirez were “banned from taking part in any kind of football-related activity, for life,” FIFA said.
Cabrera, 32, played four games with Real Salt Lake during the 2005 Major League Soccer season. He has exactly 100 international appearnaces for the Guatemalan national team.
The three were involved in fixing Guatemala friendlies against Venezuela in June 2011 and Costa Rica in May of this year.
The charges also included a CCL match between CSD Municipal (Guatemala) and Santos Laguna (Mexico) on Oct. 19, 2010, according to FIFA. Santos won 6-1.
The three players were banned by the Guatemala Football Association last month.
