GROS ISLET, St. Lucia – St. Lucia opened its involvement in the CFU Caribbean Cup with a 5-1 triumph over 10-man Curacao to end a six-game winless streak in a Group 2 encounter on Sunday.
In the first match of the doubleheader, St. Vincent & the Grenadines recorded a 2-1 win over Guyana to extend its winless streak to 10 games (0-9-1).
St. Lucia 5, Curacao 1
Tremain Paul was the first of five goal-scorers for the hosts in the 14th minute. They grabbed a 2-0 halftime lead and added a pair of goals in the final three minutes – one of which came after Curacao was reduced to 10 men.
The triumph was the first for St. Lucia since a 4-2 victory over Aruba on July 12, 2011, a result that boosted the former into the second World Cup qualifying round.
Magnam Valcin tallied for St. Lucia a minute before halftime. After Isenia Alexander tried to rally Curacao with a 48th-minute goal, Eden Charles restored the two-goal advantage three minutes later.
Tafari Charlemagne made it 4-0 the 87th minute.
After Delando Felipe was awarded his second yellow card in the 89th minute before Kurt Frederick completed the scoring two minutes into stoppage time.
St. Vincent & the Grenadines 2, Guyana 1
Cornelius Stewart scored in the 79th minute, scoring in his third consecutive match – at Beausejour Stadium as St. Vincent registered its fourth win in six matches.
The Golden Jaguars have lost nine of their last 10 since a 2-1 victory over Grenada in a friendly on Feb. 21, with only by a 2-2 tie with El Salvador in World Cup qualifying on Sept. 7.
Myron Samuel gave St. Vincent the lead in the 30th minute before Gregory Richardson equalized during first-half injury time.
Group 2 will resume with Curacao facing Guyana and St. Lucia taking on St. Vincent on Tuesday. The group winner will advance to the second round and join Grenada, Haiti and French Guyana. The Group 2 second-place side also will advance, joining Cuba, Trinidad & Tobago and Suriname.
