BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – St. Kitts & Nevis recorded a 2-0 victory over Anguilla in its opening game of the Caribbean Cup Group 5 on Wednesday night.

Romaine Sawyers and Atiba Harris, a member of the Vancouver Whitecaps, scored in the 15th and 20th minutes, respectively, to lead St. Kitts, which has advanced past the first round in five of the past six competitions.

It was the first time in six games in more than a year that St. Kitts has tallied more than one goal in a game. That dates back to a 4-2 win over St. Lucia in World Cup qualifying.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Trinidad & Tobago overcame a 1-0 deficit to register a 4-1 triumph over Grench Guiana.

The group continues on Friday, when Anguilla takes on Trinidad, and St. Kitts meets French Guiana. The group winner will reach the second round to face Cuba, Suriname and the Group 2 runner-up.

The second-place team also can advance, but it must finish better than Group 4 runner-up Barbados, which finished with six points and a goal difference of plus one.

The top four finishers in the cup will qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup next year.
