SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador — Costa Rica took a giant step toward reaching the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying on Friday, registered a 1-0 victory over nine-man El Salvador.
Jose Cubero scored the lone goal of the Group B match in the 31st minute to put the Ticos in the drivers seat.
The Costa Ricans improved to 2-2-1 and seven points and moved past the Salvadorans (1-2-2, five) and into second place behind first-place Mexico (5-0-0, 15).
Costa Rica will host winless Guyana (0-4-1, one), 5-0 losers to Mexico on Friday night, in San Jose on Tuesday, while El Salvador must visit Mexico at dreaded Azteca Stadium the same night.
The hosts were hit with not one, but two red cards — Eliseo Quintanilla and Alfredo Pacheco — who were giving their marching orders in the 87th minute and one minute into second-half added time, respectively.
Both players will miss Tuesday’s match.
