You can’t score if you are not on the field as U.S. international striker Jozy Altidore discovered the hard way on Sunday.

Altidore was given a red card in the 52nd minute of nine-man AZ Alkmaar’s 3-0 defeat to Twente Enschede in the Dutch First Division.

At the time of his card, the hosts led, 1-0, on a Nacer Chadli goal in the 20th minute.

A minute after Adam Maher was given his marching orders by the referee in the 51st minute, Altidore was dismissed, forcing AZ to play the rest of the way with nine players.

Dusan Tadic converted a penalty kick in the 60th minute and Luc Castiagos added a goal two minutes later.
