ALAJUELA, Costa Rica – Alvaro Sanchez converted a second-half penalty kick to lift Alajuelense to a 1-0 victory over Real Esteli in a Group 6 match of the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday night.
The win moved the Costa Rican side within a draw of reaching the quarterfinals as Alajuelense improved to 2-0-1 and seven points. The team needs at least a tie against Tigres UANL (Mexico), which has five points, on Oct. 24.
The hosts remained undefeated at home in six CCL matches, while the Nicaraguan side stayed winless in eight CCL games (0-6-2).
Alajuelense enjoyed most of the possession and ripped a shot off the post before Sanchez converted the penalty kick in the 49th minute.
The spot kick was created when Eliud Zeledon took down Anderson Andrade on the right edge of the penaty area as the two wrestled for position for the ball.
Alajuelense outshot Real Esteli, 15-4.
