BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Dominica and the Dominican Republic are going down to the wire in Group 4 qualifying in the Caribbean Cup.
Both teams recorded wins during matches on Tuesday, setting up a Thursday confrontation between the two countries. Host Barbados will take on Aruba (0-0-1, one).
The Dominican Republic (1-0-1, four points) leads Dominica (1-1-0, three) by a point. The group winner is assured of advancing, along with the best second-place team from Group 4 or Group 5.
In 2010, Dominica defeated the Dominican Republic, 1-0, in Santo Domingo in the final first-round encounter to advance to the next round.
Dominican Republic 1, Barbados 0
Second-half substitute Pedro Nunez struck in the 80th minute to boost the Dominican Republic to the win.
Nunez came on in the 66th minute, the second consecutive time he became a second-half sub. After he replacied Jonathan Fana he scored 14 minutes later.
Dominica 3, Aruba 2
Kurlson Benjamin scored twice to lift Dominica in a see-saw battle.
Benjamin found the back of the net in the 45th and 77th minutes, the second goal 16 minutes after Reinhard Breinburg was issued a second yellow card and given his marching order.
Chad Bertrand gave Dominica a 1-0 advantage in the 36th minute, but Aruba rallied with Jean-Luc Bergen’s equalizer four minutes later and Frederic Gomez’s go-ahead score in the 55th minute.
