Caribbean Cup: Dominican Republic, Aruba tie; Barbados ekes past Dominica

Posted on September 24, 2012

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The opening night of the Caribbean Cup Group 4 matches featured a pair of distinctively different matches on Sunday night.

The Dominican Republic rallied twice to record a 2-2 draw with Aruba in the first game of a rain-soaked doubleheader, and Barbados got past Dominica in the nightcap at Kensington Oval.

Dominican Republic 2, Aruba 2

Erick Lopez scored a goal in each half to rally the Dominican Republic to a tie.

He found the back of the net in the 13th and 76th minutes, twice overcoming Aruba leads. Raymond Baten (free kick in sixth minute) and Rensy Barradas (30th minute) had given Aruba a two-goal advantage.

Baten put Aruba ahead with a free kick before Lopez equalized seven minutes later by capitalizing on a defensive error.

Aruba itself took advantage of a Dominican Republic mistake to grab a 2-1 lead when an attempted clearance by Heinz Barmettler fell to Barradas, who put it home.

Lopez notted things up in the 66th minute, running onto a loose ball and chipping goalkeeper Eric Abdul, who was off his line.

Barbados 1, Dominica 0

Rashida Williams tallied off a deflection of a Ramuel Miller shot in the 35th minute.

Williams would be give up trying to add to the lead. He helped Barbados control the midfield and almost helped the Bajan Rockets to a second goal as he set up Tristan Parris, who shot wide just before halftime.

Williams also created chances for Parris and Mario Harte in the final half.

Chad Bertrand had the Dominican Republic’s best opportunities, getting behind defender Barry Skeete with only goalkeeper Jason Boxill to beat in the 61st minute before losing his footing.

Some nine minutes later Bertrand set up Kelrick Walter, who shot wide.
