QUETZALTENANGO, Guatemala – Just call it a Taylor made victory for Xelaju on Tuesday night.
Fredy Taylor headed in Allan Aleman’s cross in the 75th minute to lift Xelaju a 3-2 win over DirecTV W Connection in the CONCACAF Champions League.
The victory improved the Guatemalans to seven points atop Group 8, four points ahead of CD Guadalajara. The Mexican team will travel to Trinidad & Tobago next week to play W Connection. Xelaju and Chivas are set to play in the group finale in Mexico on Oct. 25.
The loss eliminated the Caribbean club, which has one point and only one game remaining. W Connection, which won’t begin its league season until Oct. 2, had recorded a 2-0 triumph over Defence Force in the Trinidad Charity Shield match on Saturday.
It was Xelaju’s 10 consecutive home win. The Guatemalan side has not lost at Estadio Mario Camposeco since March 19, 2011, which is a 16-game unbeaten streak (10-0-6).
Taylor ran at the back post and headed home the cross from Aleman, who found space on the left side to turn and curl a right-footed ball across the face of goal.
Joevin Jones pulled W Connection evev at 2-2 in the 50th minute, cutting inside his defender 25 yards from the net and blasting a left-footed drive that curled inside the right post past diving goalkeeper Fernando Patterson.
The Guatemalans took the lead on an own goal in the fourth minute. Sergio Morales sent a free kick into the six-yard box and Kern Cupid headed it past his own goalkeeper as he tried to clear it.
W Connection recovered, converting on a counterattack involving four players. Kemuel Rivers combined with Shahdon Winchester, who dribbled down the left before feeding Hasim Arcia. Arcia split the defense with a low rolling ball into the area and into the path of Rennie Britto, who chipped his shot over a sliding Patterson.
Israel Silva put Xelaju ahead again in the 38th minute, getting an unchallenged header to Kevin Arriola’s cross from 10 yards.
