MEXICO CITY — Defeating Mexico at Azteca Stadium, the first time the United States has recorded a win in Mexico, was doubly significant for defender Michael Orozco Fiscal.
“This means a lot to me because my parents are Mexican, but I was born in the U.S.,” said Orozco Fiscal, who tallied the lone goal in the 1-0 victory in the 80th minute.
“But since Day One I’ve chose to defend the U.S. and I’ve done it with honor and a lot of respect to the country. One thing that gives me the strength is that my family is always beside me.”
Orozco Fiscal was one of three second-half substitutes that teammed for the lone goal of the match on Wednesday. Brek Shea beat his man down the left side and slipped a pass to Terrence Boyd, who backheeled a pass to Orozco Fiscal, who was standing in front of the net. The defender then slotted the ball past goalkeeper Guillmero Ochoa.
“It’s a play that you’re right in front of the goal and in the blink of an eye you can make a difference and today, that was the difference,” Orozco Fiscal said.
Scoring that goal also meant a lot to Orozco Fiscal.
“It means a lot of honor,” he said. “It’s a lot of respect to the country. We’re making history today. I dedicate this to my family because they’re always behind me 110 percent. Now, we’ve got to improve ourselves day-by-day.”
Orozco Fiscal said the key to winning was the proper mentality.
“We talked about it all week,” he said. “This time was our time to make history and there was no turning back. I never thought I was going to score this goal, but if I would’ve had 5, 10 or 90 minutes to play that I was going to give it all with a lot of pride because I wanted to make history.”
