VANCOUVER – Jamaican international midfielder Dane Richards scored in the 64th minute to help the Vancouver Whitecaps register 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake at BC Place on Saturday.
The Whitecaps (10-7-7, 37 points) needed the victory as they closed the gap between them and second-place RSL (13-9-3, 42) in the Western Conference.
After Camilo Sanvezzo lifted the hosts to a 1-0 advantage in the 58th minute, Richards doubled the lead as he curled the ball around Chris Wingert and past goalkeeper Nick Rimando. It was Richards’ second goal with the Whitecaps since his trade from the Red Bulls last month and third of the season.
Vancouver needed that goal as Nat Borchers tallied in second-half stoppage time.
