Rampone sets soccer medal record with 4

Posted on August 9, 2012

LONDON — Christie Rampone etched her name into the record books as she won her fourth Olympic medal in as many tries on Thursday night.

Rampone earned her third gold medal — third consecutive gold — after the United States recorded a hard-fought 2-1 win over Japan at Wembley Stadium.

No other soccer player — man or woman — has won more medals.

After starting out with a silver medal in 2000, Rampone has won three consecutive times at the Summer Olympics.

Hungarian defender Dezso Novak earned three medals — two gold and a silver — in three tournaments. After winning a bronze medal in 1960, Dezso won golds in 1964 and 1968.

U.S. midfielder Heather O’Reilly has earned gold medals in three consecutive tournments as well.

Pia’s double

U.S. coach Pia Sundhage also pulled off a unique double, becoming the first women’s coach to direct teams to two championships.
