HOUSTON — Jamaican international Jermaine Taylor scored his first Major League Soccer goal, helping the Houston Dynamo to a 2-0 vicitory over the New York Red Bulls on Friday night.
The win lifted the Dynamo into first place in the Eastern Conference with a 11-5-7 mark and 40 points over the Red Bulls (11-7-5, 38), who fell into second place.
Taylor struck for the hosts in the second minute. After Red Bulls goalkeeper Bill Gaudette saved a Macoumba Kandji shot, the ball fell to defender Andre Hainault at the top of the six-yard box. Hainault sent in a ball across the goal mouth to Taylor, who kneed the ball into the net.
“The guys crashed the ball great and Jermaine did a great job being at the back post and getting rewarded for it,” Houston forward Calen Carr said.
Added coach Dominic Kinnear: “It’s always big when you score first, whether it’s in the first minute or the 80th minute. When you score first it gives you confidence. It gave us a lot of energy and brought the crowd into it right away. I think it gave the guys a lot of confidence and uplifted them physically and mentally.”
