SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras – Luciano Emilio and Juan Carlos Garica found the back of the net in the opening 16 minutes to start Olimpia to a 3-0 win over 10-man CD FAS at Estadio Franciso Morazan in the CONCACAF Champions League opener for both teams on Thursday night.
Olimpia extended its unbeaten home streak to 17 games with its 15th victory since losing to Necaxa in a Honduran league match in November. FAS lost for the second time in three matches since beginning the Salvadoran Apertura, with only one win in four games.
A good portion of the second half was played in a torrential rain storm.
Luciano Emilio needed only 67 seconds to put Olimpia ahead, slotting home in a loose ball after the visitors were unable to clear Sebastian Rosano’s corner kick. Reynaldo Tilguath mis-hit a ball across the top of the penalty area. Juan Carlos Garcia’s shot was partially blocked by Carlos Carrillo and Brayan Beckeles poked at it from just outside the six-yard box. Goalkeeper Daniel Arroyo was able to get a hand to it, but it bounded across the goalmouth where Emilio scored into an open net.
FAS tried to counter with Jorge Moran’s shot in the 11th that had to be parried wide by goalkeeper Donis Escober, but
Olimpia extended its lead in the 16th minute when an unmarked Garcia redirected Irvin Reyna’s corner kick from inside the six with a header.
The El Salvadorans’ hopes for a win all but evaporated when Raul Renderos was red-carded by Panamanian referee Jafeth Parea for a late high challenge on Roger Rojas.
Rojas got further revenge in the 75th minute, converting a loose ball in front of the net. Garcia’s cross into the near post stuck Luciano Emilio and Carrillo, dropping for Rojas, who poked the ball inside the near post.
By the final whistle, the rain was unrelenting and had saturated to the point that puddles were visible in several areas and the ball skidded to almost immediate stop
CD FAS will host the Houston Dynamo on Aug. 20 before Olimpia hosts the Major League Soccer club on Aug. 28.
