MANCHESTER — U.S. women’s coach Pia Sundhage realizes timing will be everything about getting injured midfielder Shannon Boxx onto the field.
Boxx suffered a right hamstring injury during the U.S.’s opening 4-2 win over France last week.
Sundhage is hopeful that the veteran midfielder will be able to return for the knockout round. The Americans play New Zealand in Newcastle on Friday.
“I will talk to the medical staff,” Sundhage said after the U.S. registered a 1-0 win over North Korea on Tuesday, which secured the Group G title.
“It’s all about timing. Before we put her on the field we need to test her. If we test her too early she may pull something and be out of the tournament. If we test her too late probably she doesn’t have enough time on the training field.”
