TropiGol.com Editor Michael Lewis, recently won two awards in the 2011 National Soccer Coaches Association of America writing contest.
Lewis won for writing the best deadline/game story for breaking the story that Juergen Klinsmann would sign as coach of the U.S. National Team.
He also won the college category for a story entitled “Quite a comeback” in the NCAA women’s College Cup program, a story about Colgate University’s Kiki Koroshetz, who came back to play soccer after undergoing cancer treatment.
As it turned out, Lewis recorded the first “double-double” in the history of the writing contest.
He picked up two awards in one year for the second time, becoming the first writer to so. His first double was in 2006.
It marked the ninth and 10th awards for Lewis since the contest began in 1995, when Lewis won his first award. His 10 plaques lead all entrants through the years. Soccer America’s Mike Woitalla claimed the award in the Column category, where he has won four of his eight awards since the contest’s inception.
The remaining two categories also saw repeat winners: Chris Miller of the Jacksonville (N.C.) Daily News won in the Feature category for the second consecutive year, while Jeff Kassouf did the same in the Student category, writing for EqualizerSoccer.com.
