Chicharito snaps 65-day scoreless skid with PK

LIVERPOOL — Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez, who has played so few games and minutes over the past two minutes that an All Point Bulletin could have been put out on him, found the back of the net for the English Premier League for the first time in 65 days on Tuesday.

Chicharito converted a penalty kick, as did Ditimar Berbatov as United registered a 2-0 win over Stoke at Old Trafford.

United grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute as Jermaine Pennant tripped South Korean international midfielder Park Ji-Sung in the penalty area. Because Wayne Rooney, the regular penalty-kick taker, did not play, Hernandez took United’s chase as he fired a shot into the left left-hand corner past goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen.

The goal had snapped a personal scoreless streak of 282 minutes over nine games, or since a 1-1 draw with Newcaste United on Nov. 27.

Even though the Mexican international had converted his opportunity, Berbatov put away his chance in the 52nd minute after Antonio Valencia was taken down by Jon Walters from behind. Berbatov slotted his attempt into the lower right corner.

“It’s a good night for us, of course,” United manager Sir Alex Ferguson told MUTV. “But what I’m most pleased about is our own performance. I thought our football was terrific. We kept our composure, we were very patient. Okay, we won with two penalty kicks but I think the manner in which we played our football was the most important thing.

“It’s still early doors [in terms of the title race]. It’s only the last day in January. I always say that March is a very important month, as well as the beginning of April. We play Manchester City in April, for instance.”

Chicharito certainly had reason to smile and celebrate for Man United on Tuesday.
