Carlos Vela played 80 minutes for Real Sociedad in its 5-1 victory over Sporting Gijon in La Liga in Spain on Sunday, but it was the damage the Mexican international did in the opening minutes that helped fire the team to the win.
Vela set up Spaniard David Zurutuza’s second goal in only the third minute of the rout. Only a minute prior, Zurutuza had given Real a 1-0 lead as hs volleyed home Antonio Griezmann’s cross.
“Those goals were just surreal,” Sporting coach Manolo Preciado was quoted by the Associated Press. “All the goals that they had missed earlier in the season went in today.”
Zurutuza’s day, however, turned out to be a very short one as he was forced to leave the game after collidng with Sporting defender Gregory Arnolin. The 25-year-old Zurutuza will need surgery to fix a broken nose.
“It’s a pity for Zurutuza to score the two goals in such good form and then hurt his nose,” Sociedad coach Philippe Montanier told reporters. “We will keep him in our thoughts.”
