Donovan’s crosses steal spotlight of American battle

Posted on January 27, 2012

LIVERPOOL — And the final score of Friday’s English F.A. Cup between Everton and Fulham was Landon Donovan 2, Clint Dempsey 0.

Donovan, on loan to Everton, set up two goals to lead the English Premier League side to a 2-1 win over Fulham in the sixth round of the competition.

Both players are members of the U.S. National Team.

Dempsey did not score in the game at Goodison Park as Everton won for the first time in four cup ties against the London-based team.

Donovan set up the equalizer in the 27th minute by Denis Stracqualursi and the game-winner for Marouane Fellaini in the 73rd minute. Danny Murphy’s penalty kick past U.S. international goalkeeper Tim Howard had given the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.

Donovan is in the midst of a two-month loan to Everton from the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer.

The midfielder’s cross found Stracqualursi, who finished past Robbie Stockdale to knot things up.

Later, another Donovan cross did in Fulham as Fellaini headed it home.

Dempsey, who connected for two hat-tricks in two of of last three matches, could not come close to duplicating that feat, although he barely headed a shot over the crossbar early in the second half off a cross by Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz. Minutes later, Donovan fired a wide shot from long range.
