Posted on January 22, 2012

VANCOUVER — In an unofficial result at the CONCACAF women’s Olympic qualifying tournament on Saturday, it was Academics 1, Soccer 0.

Forward Renae Cuellar, who started for Mexico in its 5-0 win over Guatemala on Friday night, won’t start another game in this competition. She has left the National Team to return to the University of Arizona.

The La Puente, Calif. native gave Mexico coach Leonardo Cuellar a letter that stated UA had failed to support her and that it demanded she return to school to finish her classes so she could graduate. She is a psychology major and Spanish minor.

Under tournament rules, a player cannot be replaced after she is injured or leaves the team.

Cuellar, 21, has left the team and is flying to Arizona. She is a psychology major and Spanish minor.

Leonardo Cuellar and Renae Cuellar were unavailable for comment.

Mexico can clinch a semifinal berth on Sunday if its defeats the Dominican Republic and if the United States beats Guatemala.
