VANCOUVER — The United States’ 14-0 triumph over the Dominican Republic might turn out to be a Pyhrric victory.
The cost for such a huge martin of victory could be the healthy, more specifically the right knee of defender Ali Krieger, who suffered a serious injury in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying match at BC Place on Friday night.
A Canadian TV station that televised the match said the injury was serious, although U.S. coach Pia Sundhage said that she wasn’t certain if the right fullback would return for Sunday’s encounter against Guatemala.
Krieger, 27, was taken out of the game on a stretcher in the 42nd minute after after Leonela Mojica raked her right knee with an extended foot. She was in great pain while team medical officials examined her on the field.
When she was asked about Krieger’s condition, Sundhage replied, “We don’t know, but we’ll find out [Saturday]. It’s probably a serious injury. So by tomorrow, we’ll know exactly what it is.”
Added U.S. striker Abby Wambach: “This game is a physical game. Things happen. We as a team will move forward, with or without her. We just have to figure out what the deal is with her knee. We are all thinking about her and wishing her all the best.”
Krieger who has made 27 international appearances, was unavailable for comment. Af halftime, she walked off the field on crutches.
